Clear aligners or veneers? How to choose for crooked teeth

In cosmetic consults, one question comes up again and again: should I straighten my teeth with aligners, or cover them with veneers? Both can transform how a smile looks, and both have loyal fans. But they solve different problems, and choosing the wrong one can cost you time, money and healthy enamel.

Here is the framework I use with patients at Northstar.

What each treatment actually does

Clear aligners physically move your natural teeth into new positions using a series of custom trays. Nothing is removed from your teeth, and the result is your own enamel in better alignment.

Veneers do not move teeth. They are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front surfaces, which change the visible shape, length and color. To look natural, they usually require removing a thin layer of enamel.

When aligners are usually the better choice

Aligners are my first recommendation when the main issue is position rather than shape or color.

• Crowding or overlapping teeth that are otherwise healthy.
• Gaps between teeth that are a normal size and shape.
• Bite problems, since veneers cannot fix how teeth meet.
• Younger adults who want to preserve as much enamel as possible.

When veneers make more sense

Veneers shine when the teeth themselves need a new look, not just a new position.

• Teeth that are chipped, worn short or unevenly shaped.
• Deep staining that whitening cannot lift.
• Small or peg-shaped teeth next to normal-sized ones.
• Very mild misalignment combined with shape or color concerns.

The combination approach

Many of the most natural results we see come from doing both in sequence. A few months of aligners puts teeth in better positions, which means veneers need less enamel removal and can be thinner and more lifelike. Some patients discover after aligners and whitening that they no longer want veneers at all.

Time, cost and upkeep

Aligners usually take 6 to 18 months with checkups every eight weeks, then nightly retainers for life. Veneers take about three weeks and three visits, then need a night guard and replacement after roughly 10 to 15 years. Costs overlap more than people expect, especially for six or more veneers, and 0% financing is available for both.

Start with a preview, not a decision

When you can see both outcomes on your own smile, the right choice is usually obvious. Results vary from person to person, and the right plan depends on an exam.
